This week I started planning for 2025. So far I have one Goal – Draw and just enjoy it! No overthinking, no complications – just a simple draw and see where it goes. This is how I start years ago. Over time the joy of just being an artist has disappeared. Somehow it’s been replaced with pressure to be better, find your style & be found by that art director. In some ways I feel like I’ve been trying to mould my art fit into some impossible box. I’m eclectic in style and sometimes I just want to draw random things and use unexpected mediums. Next year really just want to embrace this drawing whatever inspires me.
So next year is goodbye to complications & hello to drawing. I want to “Make art that brings joy” nothing more, nothing less.
When Mable Tan sent out an email last week with a simple prompt, I thought I’d give it a go. I followed her instructions and did the little brainstorm which I usually don’t do for own work. The results actually surprised me. I have happy face apples, fun line work ones and another 7 ideas sketched out that I can go back to at a later date. But the two posted here, I think will make some fun patterns for Spoonflower. Who knows the cute apples mighty even make a cute kids art print.
Sometimes small things can set you on a different path. Simple instructions and basic ideas without pressure, can be more inspiring & lead to more creativity. Will I do all the prompts? I don’t know, but I do know I will be thinking differently next time I sit down to draw.
In a sense this post is me letting go of unrealistic expectations, drawing from the heart, walking away from all the “rules” that we all seem to think we have to follow. It’s the start for me drawing with no expectation other than to enjoy the process. And to hopefully full the world with beautiful art.
